PRI senator: Fiscal reform may be achieved during National Treasury Convention.

MEXICO CITY, Jan 22, 2004 (Notimex/Corporate Mexico by Internet Securities, Inc. via COMTEX) -- Institutional Revolution Party (PRI) Senator Eric Rubio Barthell said he was confident that during the Treasury Convention, participants would discuss a general reform that includes the extension of the tax base and simplification of the administrative system.

The National Treasury Convention, which will be held starting Feb. 5, must not only analyze the distribution of federal resources for states and municipalities, but also evaluate ways to increase government income, said Rubio.

The legislator said that during this administration, current spending has increased to 30 billion pesos (US$2.71 billion), mainly due to the creation of 52 undersecretariats. He said was not coherent to insist on a reform to increase government spending if resources would be directed to payrolls.

Rubio said he agree with the generalization of IVA national sales tax if and when natural foods are exempted and a basic food basket is also established.
