Qld: Entangled humpback may have freed itself

A whale thought to have died after becoming entangled in shark nets off the Gold Coastat the weekend may have freed itself and headed south.

The whale is today believed to be somewhere off the coast of northern New South Wales.

On Sunday, whale rescuers had to abandon attempts two kilometres off Palm Beach onthe Gold Coast to free a 13-metre-long humpback.

The mammal became entangled in a large section of shark netting and also carried alength of metal chain wrapped around it and an anchor.

Last night, New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service officers spotted awhale carrying similar debris off the state's north coast.

MARK SAUL, a Queensland Boat and Fisheries Patrol field officer, says if a search findsthe whale today, marine specialists will look at ways of freeing it.
